2010-11 Programs(Posted May 24,2010)

In the last couple weeks, the district’s 2010-11 budget outlook has become more clear, which has allowed the LAEF board of directors to finalize its grant for next year. We’ve heard from many parents that they want LAEF to help save programs at risk of being cut, and that if we do, they’re willing to donate more. As a result, last Thursday LAEF voted to set next year’s fundraising goal at a record $2.35 million, an increase of $540,000 over this year’s grant.

Our 2010-11 grant will continue to support LAEF-backed programs like hands-on science, art, music and PE. The big increase in funding will cover things parents told us were most important to them:

  • Prevent increases in class sizes, keeping them at current levels* at all seven elementary schools (eliminating the need for multi-grade combination classes)
  • Maintain manageable class sizes and a broad selection of electives at both junior highs
  • Keep library hours at current levels

LAEF’s rescue plan, developed in cooperation with district administrators, principals and PTAs, will be incorporated into the overall educational program for 2010-11, subject to approval by the Board of Trustees at its meeting Monday May 24, 7pm in the district board room next to Covington School.
