LASD students learn essential skills for life
LASD joined schools around the world to celebrate Computer Science Education Week. This annual event was dedicated to inspiring K-12 students to take interest in computer science. Our students participated in the Hour of Code program organized by Code.org. This year’s LASD theme was Code with a Buddy and TRY Something NEW.
Kids Who Learn Computer Science (CS) Learn Skills for Life
Around the world, K-12 computer science education is gaining momentum. Research organizations, universities, industry and governments now acknowledge that every student must have the opportunity to learn computer science. It teaches problem solving, creativity, logic and other skills that apply to all subjects. It also prepares students to be literate in the digital world - to not just consume technology but also create it. CS education prepares our students to be successful in any career.
“Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer … because it teaches you how to think.” – Steve Jobs
Computer Science Education has Become Essential
Gallup and Google’s second year of comprehensive research on computer science education shows that students, parents, teachers and administrators continue to value CS learning. More than 9 in 10 parents feel that opportunities to learn CS are a good use of school resources. While large school districts like San Francisco and New York City have recently added computer science programs, LASD has already been teaching computer science for 7 years!
LASD Takes Computer Science to the Next Level
This school year, every student in our district has an opportunity to code because computer science is being integrated into core classes through STEM and Science. In addition, a CS elective using Python is available to junior high school students.
LASD has two dedicated computer science teachers who design our program and instruct our students: Ms. Sheena Vaidyanathan (Ms. V) and Ms. Elice Bui. Find out more about what students in each grade are learning in computer science this school year.
LASD Computer Science Teachers are on the Cutting Edge
LASD is considered a role model for other schools. The leading education technology resource EdSurge recently included an article on this topic by our own LASD teacher and CS integration expert, Ms V: Moving From an 'Hour of Code’ to Districtwide 'Computer Science for All’
Thank you to everyone who has donated to LAEF for the 2016-17 school year. You are making LASD computer science possible for our students.
